C. A. CASTRO LOBATO
(Mexico City, 2003; lives and works in Venice, Italy)
ABOUT
BIO
Castro Lobato (Mexico City, 2003) is a Mexican multidisciplinary artist. He is currently completing his last year in the Multimedia Arts program at IUAV University in Venice, while undertaking an internship as assistant to the artist Valentina Furian. After moving to Spain in 2021 and later to Venice in 2023, Castro Lobato began shaping a practice deeply rooted in the experience of his own body. Born with a disability that affects movement on the right side, he conceives of himself as carrying a “body within the body” a condition that forms the foundation of his artistic thought. His works explore relationships between bodies through shifting tensions and dualities: the Ignorant Body and the Wise Body; the Dynamic Body and the Static Body; the Sleeping Body and the Awake Body. From this interplay of states, his practice emerges as an investigation into presence, absence, and transformation.

STATEMENT
Castro Lobato practice unfolds around the act of domestication. His work explores the construction of identity as a politicized and socialized territory a malleable and manipulable matter that responds to power structures and processes of normalization. In this context, the body is revealed as a performative space, a ritual vessel, where the repetition of acts builds an appearance of normality that sustains itself through constant iteration. Through sculptures, and temporary installations, Lobato investigates the processes that shape and generate margins where categories of bodies and subjectivities are configured. In his work, the need to reclaim the feral emerges as an act of subversion and resistance a means of escape from the narratives of domestication imposed by social norms. In this sense, the feral arises in the interstice between belonging and exclusion, as a possibility for bodily emancipation and vindication.
