BIO

C. A. Castro Lobato (Mexico City, 2003) is a Mexican multidisciplinary artist. His practice combines sculpture, drawing, installation, and video. He is currently completing his final year in the Multimedia Arts program at IUAV University of Venice. After relocating to Spain in 2021 and later to Venice in 2023, Castro Lobato began developing a practice deeply rooted in family memory, focusing on the concept of a body within a body—a condition that forms the foundation of his artistic thinking.

His works explore relationships between bodies through shifting tensions and dualities: the Ignorant Body and the Wise Body, the Dynamic Body and the Static Body, the Sleeping Body and the Awake Body. From this exchange of states, his practice emerges as an investigation into presence, absence, and the transformation of anthropological rituals.

His work examines the construction of identity as a politicized and socialized territory—a malleable and manipulable material that responds to structures of power and processes of normalization. Within this framework, the body reveals itself as a performative space, a ritual vessel in which the repetition of actions constructs an appearance of normality sustained through constant iteration. Through sculptures and temporary installations, Lobato investigates the processes that shape and generate margins in which categories of bodies and subjectivities are configured. In his work, the need to reclaim the wild emerges as an act of subversion and resistance—a way of withdrawing from narratives of domestication imposed by social norms. In this sense, the wild manifests itself in the interstice between belonging and exclusion.

STATEMENT

My artistic research originates from the observation of the relationship between two bodies. In particular, I am interested in the idea of the existence of a body within a body. At the core of this research lies a reflection on the transition to modernity, understood as the moment in which the human being ceases to be an end in itself and progressively becomes a means: a means for production and for social organization. In this sense, the body is no longer autonomous, but is shaped, disciplined, and traversed by external systems.

I am interested in investigating those dispositifs of control that do not operate in a direct or coercive way, but rather infiltrate the body at an unconscious level, through structures external to it. These are systems that the body ultimately internalizes, to the point of perceiving them as natural.

This relational scheme constitutes the common thread throughout my entire practice. In my works, the presence of two bodies in relation constantly recurs, often constructed through oppositions: the knowing body and the ignorant body, the mobile body and the immobile body, the awake body and the sleeping body. These pairs are never rigid or definitively hierarchical, but instead generate a tension. It is precisely within this relational tension that, for me, a space of inquiry into the system opens up: into how power, knowledge, and control become embodied within bodies and their relationships.

The body thus becomes the site where systems manifest themselves, sediment, and become visible. Through the relationship between two bodies, I seek to make legible the mechanisms that structure our ways of standing, moving, and existing in the world.
